NASHVILLE (Reuters) - Harriman, Tennessee hopes that ghosts, or rather ghost hunters, can raise enough money to restore an historic and reputedly haunted building.
One ghost hunter wants to use the “dark entities” supposedly haunting the 121-year-old Temperance Building, a former jail, to attract both tourists and paranormal enthusiasts to Harriman, which was founded by anti-alcohol crusaders in the 19th century.
Last week, by unanimous vote, the six-person city council agreed to let Ghost Hunters of Southern Tennessee — G.H.O.S.T. Paranormal — show footage caught during a night spent inside the city-owned building. It will be aired on January 27 on the web-based Paranormal Network.
This Tuesday, a council workshop is slated to consider ghost hunter Richard Ruland’s plans to conduct paid tours of the building, with half the proceeds going toward its restoration.
The haunting is a part of local lore, said Mayor Chris Mason, who grew up in the town of about 7,000 residents. Ghost enthusiasts often visit the Temperance Building, but G.H.O.S.T. Paranormal “found an exceptional amount of paranormal activity” there, said the mayor.
The city of Harriman was founded on temperance.
“There would be no liquor, no alcohol in the city of Harriman,” said Mayor Chris Mason.
At it’s center is the Temperance building.
“It was the first building that was here, so it’s got a real storied past,” Mason said.
That past includes use as an office space, a college, even a jail. It may include paranormal activity as well.
“Its not a building that I want to be in by myself, during the day or night,” Mason said.
A number of groups have hunted ghosts inside the building, but now one set of investigators sees the building’s history as a key to it’s survival.
“We’ve been to a lot of places. I don’t know if we’ve ever had as much energy as we’ve ever had here,” said Richard Ruland, Co-Founder of G.H.O.S.T. Paranormal.
His team investigated the Temperance building in December and says they captured more than 70 “E.V.P”s or electronic voice phenomena, along with a picture of a full-bodied apparition.

There are many other shows that John will be hosting and attending throughout the year, so there will be other opportunities for those who have missed out. In 2011, John and friends hosted the Reiki Clinic. Reiki Practitioners are always welcome, John even invites them to be a part of the clinic. The show that I will be attending next month, focuses on spirits who have crossed over. John will be talking about his journey and the work he does, being Readings, healing, clearance work etc. John Overholt: “Now there has never been an occasion where people gather and the spirits don’t try to come through….. :-) So I think it will be safe to say that a reading or two will sneak itself into the evening”. I definitely can’t wait to go to the show now. I am hoping that my mother got her email sent in, it is something that I would like for her to experience and hopefully she will understand more on a spiritual level. And, it may even help her to understand why I investigate the paranormal…. A few months ago, something was brought into my family’s home. At this time, I was away a lot and would only be home for a night or 2. I knew there was something different and could feel the change, but wasn’t around long enough to check. After researching and talking to my mother about what I had found, she decided to take it on by herself. She knew that I didn’t want her to do it until I had investigated and confirmed what it was. Remembering back, she began talking in Māori and reciting the Lord’s prayer. I returned home 2 days after my mother blessed our home. As soon as I walked in the door, I could feel the change in the air. Visitors started coming over more often and they too could feel a difference.

Whatever it may be to do with the Ghost Box, please share your experience(s), use or opinion of the equipment. I am very interested in what others have to say about it. I know there has been a lot of controversy about it, but there are also positive sides of it.
